Nichelle Nichols’ Ashes will Voyage to Space Aboard a Vulcan Rocket
Star Trek actress who played Lieutenant Nota Uhura will continue to break ground….
Nichelle Nichols was the first black woman to hold a major role on television. Beyond the screen she served as an advocate to NASA to encourage recruitment of astronauts from underrepresented backgrounds and is credited with helping Colonel Guion Bluford, the first Black man and Sally Ride, the first woman, get to space.
Nichols, who died this past July at the age of 89, will continue to break ground when her ashes, and those of several other Star Trek veterans, are sent into deep space aboard Celestis’ “Enterprise Flight” mission.
